2 Peer Responses Nature Vs. Nurture Debate

1.  Nature vs. Nurture is demonstrating if you were naturally born to be who you are and it was pre-determinded by your DNA and genetics. If you are genetically a boy and have male chromosomes, then you are meant to be male. Vice versa as stated in the text. Nurture is saying the exposure to envoirnment, influences of friends and families, personal experiences, etc. The text tries to pick the nature idea due to the genetics selecting your gender. In the text, it states ” However, her forerunner message continues as a bulwark against the “it ‘only naturalargumentNo existing theory, specifically those grounded in essentialism, can explain the immense variety of meanings in the human experience attached to being male and female. It is pre-cisely this variation that has led to so much research questioning biologically-based beliefs regarding femininity and masculinity…” (Lindsey, 2021). The text is trying to say that long ago, society thought it was nature deciding this factor. Genetics play a role and this was pre-determinded through biological makeup. I personally believe it can be both. Your biological makeup could play a big role which effects you. Nurture aspect could be your personal influeces and beliefs that you are raised with. It could play a part but it doesnt always mean that it will determine the decisions you’ll make. Both ideas do play a part though.

Question: Do you think nature v nuture effects different parts of life? Explain why or why not.

2. Nature consists of biological factors, genes, and traits from parents that contribute to individual personality and behaviors. For example, depression can run in the family, affecting both parents and, eventually, their kids. Nature explaining what’s going on with some people is a strength. It can provide doctors with insight on how to treat a patient. The downside to nature is it only looks at things from one angle.

Nurture expresses that behaviors are usually taught, and what a child is exposed to and what society deems normal and acceptable shapes people’s identity. For example, boys wrestle and play sports. They are expected to be tough and play roughly, while girls are taught to have tea parties and play with dolls. Nurture’s strength explains how society needs to grow to move away from forcing expectations on children and minimize stereotyping. Nurture weakness is also the fact that it is one-sided and only looks at things one way, not considering the biological factors that can influence one’s behavior.

Both sides make sense to me. It all depends on how a person looks at a situation and the issue that needs solving. Together, nurture and nature give a more accurate picture of a person’s life and further explain their behavior. One side without the other may leave unanswered questions.
